Over the last two decades, a wide range of research on the effectiveness of communication strategies on public opinion of technoscience has emerged, of which an important outcome is risk perception. The present systematic review consolidates 61 experimental studies to report on the impact of communication strategies on risk perception among technoscientific applications. Following Toulmin's model of argumentation, this review consolidates knowledge and highlights knowledge gaps of communication strategies in each argumentative component, allowing for general conclusions and empirical inconsistencies to be highlighted. Findings shed light on how science communication research and subsequently practice can benefit from models grounded in reasonableness. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
