Abstract

According to the psychological mediation framework, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people are exposed to distal minority stressors (e.g., family rejection) which are associated with proximal minority stressors (e.g., internalized transphobia) and general psychological processes (e.g., low social support), in turn increasing the risk for negative mental health outcomes. Moreover, there are individual- (e.g., resilience) and group-level (e.g., collective action) coping mechanisms that buffer the negative effects of both distal and proximal stressors on mental health outcomes. However, there is limited research exploring family rejection as a distal stressor among TGD young adults and the mediating role of the social/interpersonal component of general psychological processes. Using a sample of 227 TGD young adults (M-age = 21.7), this study tested a structural equation model with indirect and direct effects from family rejection to depression and anxiety symptoms through social support and internalized transphobia, as moderated by resilience and collective action. Family rejection was not directly associated with any of the negative mental health outcomes. Internalized transphobia was positively associated with depression, and social support was negatively associated with anxiety. Resilience was negatively associated with both negative mental health outcomes. Finally, social support mediated the positive link between family rejection and anxiety, and resilience buffered this indirect relationship. These findings highlight the more direct association between TGD proximal stressors (vs. distal stressors) and negative mental health among TGD young adults and shed light on the psychological mechanisms in the stressor-mental health link, emphasizing the protective role of social support and resilience.
