• Association between direct visibility metrics and turning pedestrian crash risk was examined. • Police-reported crash data and direct visibility measurements of vehicles involved were used. • Larger driver blind zones, longer front NVP distances, and narrower front FOVs increased left-turn pedestrian crash risk. • The study identified problematic aspects of vehicle design that reduce drivers’ direct visibility.
