• Forest disturbance type and severity jointly structure saproxylic beetle communities in boreal forests. • Burnt forests support higher diversity, richness, and abundance than insect-damaged stands, with fire-favoured beetles peaking under high-severity disturbance and declining toward undisturbed conditions. • Community responses are context-dependent, with forest type mediating disturbance effects. • Indicator species analyses identify xylophagous taxa (Buprestidae, Cerambycidae) linked to high-severity disturbance. • Retention of post-disturbance deadwood is critical for maintaining saproxylic biodiversity.
