• The effects of habitat complexity on pollinator site-use are poorly understood. • We collaborated with 84 volunteers to observe bee site-use in 85 gardens. • We used occupancy detection modeling to address variation in detectability. • Habitat complexity influenced site-use more than urbanization or flower richness. • Exotic bee species used more urban sites; most native species were less responsive.
