• Hydrogen accelerates multilayer corrosion of CLF-1 steel in Li4SiO4. • Oxidation dominates before lithiation during corrosion evolution. • Hydrogen promotes Fe diffusion, void formation and breakaway oxidation. • A coupled oxidation–lithiation–reduction mechanism is proposed.
