• Gd3-xLuxAl3Ga2O12:Ce,Mg nanopowders were synthesized via the. • Co-precipitation method. • Gd3-xLuxAl3Ga2O12:Ce,Mg ceramics were fabricated by combination of oxygen sintering and hot isostatic pressing. • Thermal ionization activation energy increased with increasing Lu content. • GdLu2Al3Ga2O12:Ce,Mg showed scintillation LY of 11,400 photons/MeV, mean decay time of 39.6 ns and time resolution of 249 ps.
