• Ni addition to near-eutectic Al–10Ce raises the liquidus temperature and broadens the solidification range. • Ni promotes grain refinement and increases the fraction of strengthening intermetallic phases. • Al–Al11Ce3–Al3Ni ternary eutectic structures form, with Al23Ce4Ni6 appearing at 5 wt% Ni. • Refined Al–Al11Ce3–Al3Ni eutectic improves strengthening efficiency.
