• Combined AFM and molecular dynamics revealed chloride salt–induced adhesion evolution in asphalt. • Chloride salt erosion altered bee-like structures and increased surface adhesion heterogeneity. • Tensile loading produced greater adhesion enhancement and energy dissipation than compression. • Asphalt adhesion and asphalt–aggregate interfacial energy peaked at approximately 10% NaCl concentration. • Component migration and salt crystal deposition jointly governed interfacial adhesion evolution.
