Some of the existing one-dimensional (1D) chaotic systems have drawbacks such as simple chaotic behaviors and discrete chaotic intervals, which limit their application in the field of image encryption. In order to construct a more suitable chaotic system for image encryption algorithms, based on the study of the Logistic map and the iterative chaotic map with infinite collapses (ICMIC), this paper proposes a new two-dimensional (2D) ICMIC-Logistic modulation (2D-ILM) map. A variety of chaotic performance indicators are used to verify the chaotic behaviors of the 2D-ILM map. The outcomes demonstrate that the 2D-ILM map has complex and continuous chaotic behaviors. Then, we further design a new efficient image encryption algorithm using the 2D-ILM map and the Latin square matrix. The proposed encryption algorithm only needs to generate a shorter chaotic sequence to complete all encryption operations, greatly improving encryption efficiency. Finally, simulation experiments and security analysis results demonstrate that the designed encryption algorithm can withstand common cryptanalytical analysis attacks and has relatively more efficient execution.
