• Ion-specific electro-responsive nanofriction was revealed for imidazolium-based ionic liquids at charged organosilicon-modified Au interfaces. • Negative electrical potentials induced opposite frictional responses in structurally distinct ionic liquids, driven by differences in cation polarity and interfacial adsorption. • Short-range attractive interactions dominate adhesion-controlled nanofriction and link wettability to friction under applied potential
