Electroless deposition for biomimetic microstructures: from fundamental principles to practical applications

Electroless deposition is an autocatalytic coating method that delivers uniform, conformal films without external current, enabling precise fabrication of biomimetic micro- and nanostructures. This review summarizes core principles (surface activation, bath chemistry, and parameter control) and shows how they tune morphology and mechanical, optical, and biological performance. We highlight recent advances in nature-inspired coatings for biomedical devices, tissue-engineering scaffolds, and environmental technologies. By linking process fundamentals to function-driven design, we outline pathways toward sustainable, high-performance materials and discuss emerging opportunities and challenges for next-generation manufacturing.
