We present a method by which the relatively weak electromagnetic force exerted on a surface can be dramatically enhanced. By structuring ametal surface at the nanoscale, we showthat the force can be substantially increased over that on the planar metallic surface. The basis for this effect is found to be cavity-enhanced fields and the excitation of surface waves, and results are related to theory. In practice, this force enhancement could be expanded to other materials in various frequency regimes. This increased electromagnetic force should facilitate an expansion of applications related to optomechanics.
