Abstract

This letter proposes a hybrid modified Harris Hawks optimization–differential evolution (MHHO–DE) algorithm for accurate complex permittivity extraction. While existing methods often struggle with premature convergence and local optima trapping, MHHO–DE ensures robust global searching. Compared to particle swarm optimization, MHHO–DE effectively escapes local optima, reducing the final extraction error by more than 30% for three diverse building materials in the 19 GHz to 35 GHz band. It also enables thickness measurement with errors as low as 0.45%. This method provides network engineers with a convenient tool to evaluate building materials’ wireless performance during building design.
