Abstract

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have developed fascinating electrode materials for large-scale energy storage devices due to their exceptionally high specific surface area and porous structure. Herein, Ni-MOFs are synthesized through the solvothermal method using five different ligands to investigate their potential as super-capacitor electrode materials. The successful formation of MOFs (Ni-PM MOF, Ni-BDC MOF, Ni-MEIM MOF, Ni-BTC MOF, Ni-PEG MOF) exhibited crystalline structure in X-ray diffraction analysis. Surface area calculation carried out using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method reveals that Nickel phenanthroline monohydrate MOF (Ni-PM MOF) demonstrates the highest surface area of 24.38 m2 g-1 among fabricated Ni-MOFs. Electrochemical measurements show that Ni-PM MOF achieved the highest specific capacitance of 1497 F/g at 0.5 A/g and low charge transfer resistance Rctof 0.82 Omega compared to other Ni-MOFs electrodes. Furthermore, the Ni-PM MOF electrode material demonstrates outstanding cycling stability with a 94.1 % capacitance retention after 5000 continuous charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A/g. Overall, Ni-PM MOF can be utilized as a potential electrode material for the applications of a supercapacitor due to its better electrochemical performance compared to other Ni-MOFs.
