• Experienced drivers showed higher accuracy in the Hazard Prediction–Orienting Task. • Experienced drivers exhibited broader visual scanning patterns, and larger saccade amplitudes. • Non-experienced drivers showed longer fixation durations. • Non-experienced drivers showed a greater proportion of fixations outside hazard-related areas. • Cardiac responses were consistent with attentional orienting to misleading cues.
