CNS terminology and abbreviations are often in conflict across species, developmental stages, and neuroanatomical traditions. We present a system of rules for the construction of a unified, non-conflicting list of terms and abbreviations for CNS structures across mammals and birds, and throughout development. The system is inspired by the principles used for the construction of abbreviations in the periodic table. In the proposed system, homologous structures across species are assigned the same terms and abbreviations. The elimination of idiosyncratic abbreviations would facilitate communication and might preempt fallacious cross-species inferences. Via our online resource, we present a list of terms and abbreviations for approximately 3300 CNS structures. The resource is intended to evolve by incorporating corrections from expert scientists and by including additional species.
