Enabling mobile augmented reality (AR) applications in 5G networks needs special consideration to achieve low latency and high quality of experience (QoE). This is doable thanks to the network function virtualization (NFV) and mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies. Such technologies are the main elements of the edge/cloud virtualization that can facilitate the deployment and running of AR applications over 5G networks. This work is dedicated to the development, deployment and testing of virtualized network functions (VNFs) that are evaluated in real-world 5G network testbed infrastructure. In fact, we evaluated the performance of the VNFs, which enable mobile AR streaming using the edge/cloud computing and 5G networking infrastructure. The results show the performance of the overall networking application (NetApp) that has been developed during the 5G-IANA project such as latency is decreased by two or three times while the data rate is increased two or three times depending on the number of transmission bytes.
