• The transferability of the I-DSCS design to practical engine application is justified. • I-DSCS increases indicated thermal efficiency and reduces soot emissions. • I-DSCS reduces accumulation-mode soot particle size and number concentration. • I-DSCS reduces cylinder head fire deck temperature and heat dissipation.
