• OEGMA-based hydrogels with heterogeneous and homogenous network structures were prepared. • FRP or RAFT polymerization were used for gel synthesis. • Network morphology had an impact on antibacterial performance. • Cationic group distribution modulate the balance between antibacterial efficacy and cytocompatibility.
