Abstract

Sensorless control of PMSMs at low speeds is challenging due to the small magnitude of extended electromotive force (EEMF) and the resulting low signal-to-noise ratio, which limits control bandwidth and degrades robustness against disturbances. This study proposes a method for estimating the EEMF through current oversampling. This method integrates oversampled current data with a modeled inverter voltage to enable EEMF estimation within each pulse-width modulation (PWM) period. Compared to conventional methods, this approach increases the signal-to-noise ratio to achieve higher accuracy. Typically, noise restricts the bandwidth of the phase-locked loop (PLL), automatic speed regulator (ASR), and automatic current regulator (ACR). However, the proposed scheme alleviates these constraints. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that this method maintains robustness against abrupt load changes at low speeds-conditions under which EEMF is small and position estimation becomes less reliable-and reduces the transient angle error by 43%. Moreover, the results validate performance improvement with increasing oversampling count. In conclusion, the proposed method enhances the responsiveness and stability of EEMF-based sensorless control in the low-speed region.
