• Effects of Bi on softening and thermal stability of AZ61–0.7Si alloy were studied in the temperature range of 298–523 K. • Using hot hardness and hot shear punch test (SPT), transition temperatures and softening coefficients were measured. • Bi addition increased strength, hardness, and transition temperature while decreasing softening coefficient. • The enhancements were due to the structural refinement and formation of thermally stable Mg3Bi2 phase. • The hot shear data's validity for softening parameters was confirmed by comparisons with hot hardness test results.
