• Steel slag–zeolite system achieved >93% NH4+-N and >80% TN removal under high HLR. • Substrate, carbon, and hydraulic regulation improved N transformation coordination. • Alkaline substrate supported stable nitrification without intensive aeration. • Steel slag enriched AOA and Nitrospira affiliated with comammox-related lineages. • Methanol addition shifted denitrifying community by enriching methylotrophic taxa.
