• Nanocrystalline rare hexaborides as a novel activator were used to fabricate the lanthanum phosphate LaPO4:RB6 (R = Ce3+, Sm3+, Eu 3+) phosphors. • The luminescence intensity of synthesized LaPO4:RB6 phosphor is higher than using the rare earth oxide activator. • The strong hybridization of B 2p with the O 2p and La 3d states induce the defect levels and then enhance the PL intensity.
