• Thin films of Ni@C nanocomposites had been prepared using the drop casting technique. • Enhancement in Crystallite Size and reduction in lattice strain had been observed with enhancement in surface roughness. • Maximum enhancement in specific capacitance of about 45.81% had been observed at a scan rate of 10 mV s−1. • Maximum Specific capacitance of about 389.822 F g−1 with maximum roughness of 381.3 nm had been observed for 3-min etched Ni@C nanocomposites.
