• Cover crops significantly increased soil large macro-aggregates (> 2 mm). • Cover crops improved crop productivity, with leguminous types more effective than non-leguminous ones. • Cover crop type was a stronger predictor of crop productivity than changes in soil aggregate properties. • Soil pH, MAP, and texture moderated cover crop effects on WSA.
