• Biochar yields from pyro-condensation double that from fixed-bed pyrolysis at 300–500 °C. • Pyro-condensation produces little bio-oil via repeated re-polymerization of volatiles in cycled movements in reactor. • Carbon yield and energy yields in pyro-condensation are much higher than that from fixed-bed pyrolysis. • In-situ IR confirms abundance of aliphatics in biochar from pyro-condensation. • Biochar from pyro-condensation has improved combustion performance but lower environmental impact in production.
