• Organic fertilizer substitution of 25% chemical N under reduced irrigation (I1F2). • I1F2 increases maize root function and optimizes canopy architecture. • I1F2 enhances net photosynthetic rate and leaf chlorophyll fluorescence. • I1F2 improves enzyme activity of carbon-nitrogen and source-sink translocation. • I1F2 maximizes maize grain yield, yield stability, and radiation use efficiency.
