• The photoreceptor CarH cleaves AdoCbl to form Co(I) and an olefin product. • This reactivity is similar to the photochemistry of simple alkylcobalamins. • However, AdoCbl in solution always produces Co(II) and a cyclic product. • The same is observed for AdoCbl bound to typical AdoCbl-dependent proteins. • CarH is very unusual in promoting intrinsic alkyl-radical behavior for 5′-dAdo.
