• Tectonic escape is the movement of lithosphere obliquely away from a collision zone. • Escape has operated in some form throughout geologic history. • Escape is a mechanism for new plate formation from existing ones. • Strike-slip faults bounding escaping blocks are seismically active and hazardous. • The indenter-proximal fault is more seismically active than the distal fault.
