Abstract

Taking the satellite altimeter dataset as the standard, this study comparatively evaluates the reliability of the dynamic sea level (DSL) data over the East China Sea (ECS) in three oceanic reanalysis products, which were post-processed and released as the Global Reanalysis Ensemble Product by Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service. The inter-comparison indicates that all three reanalysis products accurately capture the spatial pattern of the DSL in the ECS, showing higher values in the south and lower values in the north. Regarding the temporal evolutions of DSL, the three reanalysis products consistently display significant seasonal variations, with the peaks in summer and autumn and troughs in winter and spring. Quantitatively, three reanalysis products overestimate the DSL in the ECS, especially in the regions along the Kuroshio. The applicability of these reanalysis products in summer is lower than that in other seasons. Error analysis demonstrates that GLORYS2V4 (Global Ocean Reanalysis and Simulations, stream 2, version 4) corresponds better with the satellite altimeter observation than the other two reanalysis products. Therefore, the GLORYS2V4 can be used as an alternative dataset for observed DSL in the ECS to facilitate sustainable ocean management.
