This study evaluated deployment methods for a sulfur-functionalized activated carbon sorbent (MERSORB) to suppress total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) release from contaminated profundal sediments of Guadalupe Reservoir in the historic New Almaden Mining District, California. Bench-scale sediment–water chambers were used to compare sorbent application in suspended treatment bags, direct sediment application, flow-through treatment, and no-sorbent controls. Under oxic conditions, all sorbent applications significantly decreased chamber water THg relative to controls (18.9 ± 3.5 ng/L; mean and standard error; n = 3) by around half, with the lowest concentrations observed for sediment application (7.6 ± 3.8 ng/L). For MeHg in oxic chamber water, all application methods (<0.1 ng/L) were lower compared to controls (0.2 ± 0.1 ng/L). Under anoxic conditions, THg and MeHg in treatment bag and sediment application treatments were low relative to controls, whereas the flow-through treatment had elevated THg and MeHg (up to 8.6 ± 1.8 ng/L) associated with biofilm growth and decay. All sorbent treatments increased sulfate concentrations relative to controls, indicating sulfate release despite prerinsing. Results highlight the importance of amendment strategy in determining treatment effectiveness and side effects of MERSORB application for mercury control in the profundal zone of reservoirs.
