• This 50-year review shows microgrid research shifting from local control to transforming global energy frameworks. • Microgrids is feasible to improve resilience against extreme weather and close the energy access gap in underserved regions. • Microgrids are the premise and pivotal for autonomous energy systems in future space habitats and satellite system. • Highly intelligent microgrids still faces challenges in scalability, automation, security, and reliability in the future.
