• Data is from a randomized controlled trial of exposure therapy for anxiety. • We assessed predictors of anxiety symptom reduction. • Predictors included expectancy updating and fear change during exposures. • Results: expectancy updating (not fear change) predicted anxiety symptom reduction. • Implications: exposures could be designed to learn whether feared outcome occurs.
