• Combined CFD and towing-tank tests resolve tandem hydrofoil interference. • The most favourable submergence depth maximises the overall lift-to-drag ratio. • Aft foil lift follows a decrease-then-recovery trend with vertical spacing. • A favourable horizontal spacing zone yields a substantial aft foil lift gain. • Inflow angle change and strut shed vortices drive the interference mechanism.
