• Experimental and numerical study of high-speed particle–wall collisions on wet surfaces. • Transition of liquid film shape from bridge to dome with increasing impact velocity. • Coefficient of restitution ratio increases at higher velocities due to cavitation effects. • VOF method with the cavitation model successfully captures liquid film dynamics. • Findings provide new insights for modeling gas–liquid–solid three-phase flows.
