• Large-scale impact tests on RC slabs with and without rear steel liners. • Rear steel liner significantly reduces residual velocity and scabbing. • 1.5 mm steel liner ≈ 50–55 mm equivalent concrete thickness. • Rear-face liner improves resistance; front placement reduces it by 25–35%. • Equivalent thickness approach enables efficient design optimization.
