• Si particles in refined cast AlSi7Mg serve as Digital Volume Correlation speckle. • 3D displacement fields are measured with 15–28 nm uncertainty. • Post-overload crack arrest and growth recovery are monitored with tomography. • Crack reacts to overload by developing persistent crack opening and blunting. • Crack growth recovers faster in sample bulk than near the surface.
