• Meter-scale expanded flow channels were applied on refrigerant direct cooling. • Flow and thermal performance under varying conditions were experimentally investigated. • Moderate expanded ratio decreases the pressure drop while improve the flow stability. • Two dimensionless performance correlations for expanded-channels were developed.
