• Successful unassisted cold start of PEMFC at −40 °C under polar conditions. • Effective thermal accumulation based on electro-thermal cooperative control. • Greater than 80% thermal conversion efficiency under continuous power output. • Less than 2 °C intra-stack temperature difference. • Voltage variation coefficient below 3% and standard deviation below 0.02 V.
