• Thermohydraulic performance of solar air heater ducts with trapezoidal ribs are analysed experimentally. • Artificial roughness of multi trapezoidal shapes with gaps the limbs are fabricated for enhanced heat transfer. • Heat transfer effect is strongest at width of the gap (g/e = 1) and high flow speeds. • Current study reveals enhanced heat transfer with manageable flow resistance. • Provide insights in fabrication of advanced heat exchanger surfaces and high efficiency solar thermal systems.
