Explore or exploit? How explorative and exploitative IT capabilities affect new product development process performance

Abstract

• We open the NPD black box: stage-specific payoffs of IT exploration and exploitation across concept, development, and implementation. • Exploration boosts performance most in implementation; exploitation boosts performance most in product development. • Environmental dynamism strengthens exploration's effect and weakens exploitation's effect consistently across NPD stages. • Response-surface analysis identifies a balanced, exploitation-leaning optimum; joint maximization shows diminishing returns, tighter downstream imbalance tolerance. • Strategic and practical guidance is provided to calibrate IT portfolios by stage and turbulence to maximize NPD performance.
