Exploring impacts of screen blue-light level, task difficulty, time of day on subjective, behavioral, and electroencephalography responses in offices

Abstract

This study investigates the interactive effects of screen blue-light levels, task difficulty, and time of day on subjective alertness, behavioral performance, and electroencephalography (EEG) responses in office environments. Using a within-subject design, 14 participants completed psychomotor vigilance tasks under five screen blue-light levels, three task difficulties, and three circadian phases, while maintaining constant ambient lighting. Results revealed that moderately enhanced screen blue-light (BLL4) significantly reduced subjective sleepiness, improved attention stability, shortened reaction times, and increased task accuracy. EEG analyses further indicated that blue light exposure elevated beta power, suppressed theta power, and modulated alpha oscillations, with effects varying by cognitive load and circadian timing. Notably, blue-light interventions were most effective during evening sessions and under high task demands, highlighting their potential in counteracting circadian troughs and mental fatigue. These findings demonstrate that screen-emitted blue light serves as a non-visual regulator of cognition, offering neurophysiological evidence for adaptive display design and providing foundational insights into alertness regulation during screen-based tasks, which may inform future adaptive display strategies in office contexts.
