Abstract

Brainstorming groups enjoy a cohesiveness bonus over nominal groups. Brainstorming group members report a greater desire to work with their group in the future. This finding is further explored in the current study. Mutual enhancement and symbolic convergence provide possible explanations. In a competitive test, brainstorming groups were compared to brainwriting and nominal groups in 54 three-person groups (i.e. 18 groups per condition). By considering brainwriting groups, we compared groups with idea sharing to fully interacting brainstorming groups and non-interacting nominal groups. We found that brainstorming groups produce higher levels of piggybacking, symbolic convergence, and cohesiveness compared to nominal or brainwriting groups, favoring a symbolic-convergence explanation of the cohesiveness bonus.
