• We assessed nature-based risk reduction for people and energy infrastructure in Puerto Rico using InVEST®. • Ecosystems can reduce the number of people and substations at highest risk from hazards by two-thirds. • Coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses in and outside protected areas contribute to coastal risk reduction. • Energy infrastructure and coastal communities benefit from hazard-mitigating habitats in protected areas. • Urban protected areas could reduce disaster risk and enhance energy resilience under sea-level rise.
