• First long-term (2001–2023) national and regional assessment linking forest cover change with cooking-related biomass demand in Tanzania. • Above-Ground Biomass declined from 85.4 to 78.2 t ha-1, with Total Biomass Loss rising from 39 Mt to 70.1 Mt. • Total Biomass Demand for cooking increased by 145%, narrowing the supply–demand gap from 16.4 Mt to 14.7 Mt. • Fraction of Non-Renewable Biomass increased from 23.8% to ∼34%, with ∼79% attributed to cooking in 2022. • Findings provide refined biomass sustainability metrics to guide energy and forestry policy.
