• Porous biochar (MBC) was prepared from agricultural waste mangosteen shells via high-temperature pyrolysis, and MBC/BiOBr/Bi-C3N4 composite photocatalysts were constructed by regulating the mass ratio of BiOBr and Bi-C3N4. • The composite with 50 wt% MBC and BiOBr:Bi-C3N4 mass ratio of 3:1 achieved degradation efficiencies of 99.5% for RhB (10 mg/L) and 95.7% for TC (10 mg/L) within 20 min. • The introduction of MBC not only enhanced substrate adsorption capacity but also constructed electron transport channels, promoting spatial separation of charge carriers in the heterojunction.
