Integration of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a prospective strategy for energy-efficient hydrogen generation. However, developing highly effective dual functional catalysts for both HER and UOR is still challenging. Herein, two-dimensional rhodium‑nickel (RhNi) metallene with a wrinkled nanosheet structure is prepared by a feasible two-step hydrothermal approach, which provides numerous catalytically active centers and accelerates the charge transfer during the reaction. It is discovered that the integration of Ni element regulates the d-band center, and optimizes intermediate adsorption energies. Profiting from the advantageous composition and structure, the fabricated RhNi metallene exhibits enhanced catalytic properties. For cathodic HER and anodic UOR, overpotentials are only 27 mV and 1.36 V, respectively, to drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2. When assembled in HER||UOR configuration, only 1.42 V of potential is needed to realize 10 mA cm−2, showing a decrease of 210 mV relative to the typical water electrolysis setup. This study offers an innovative pathway to design exceptional bifunctional materials for HER and UOR, holding great prospects for an energy-saving hydrogen production technology.
