• ZIF-8@PEG membrane with high water permeance (549 L·m−2·h−1·MPa−1) was prepared. • Compositing ZnHNs with PEG inhibited ZIF-8 crystal Ostwald ripening during in situ conversion. • PEG retained at crystal surface creates extra hydrophilic channels for water and hydrated ion. • The optimal ZIF-8@PEG membrane has good dye rejection and very low retention to salts.
