Subjective evaluation is widely used to evaluate the impact of thermal stimuli. This article presents the characteristics of subjective thermal response during thermal transients and evaluates the influencing factors. The analysis is based on 12960 thermal sensation votes (TSV) from 27 subjects in controlled climate chamber experiments. TSV responses were collected on a discrete seven-point scale and a graphical continuum scale. The effects of assessment scale, thermal gradient, subject's awareness about the thermal environment, and cognitive biases on TSV were evaluated through five experimental routines. There is a significant difference in TSV obtained using the discrete scale and the continuum scale. Fuzzy c-means clustering of the thermal sensation votes presents evidence of asymmetry between the cold and hot thermal sensations and an unequal distribution of thermal sensation responses. Awareness about the thermal gradient elicited a higher degree of discomfort. We find a higher likelihood of subjects expressing colder thermal sensation while experiencing a decreasing thermal gradient and warmer thermal sensation during an increasing thermal gradient. Preceding thermal exposure, and cognitive biases significantly influenced TSV responses. The findings indicate that considering contextual factors and cognitive biases is essential for effectively capturing the nuances in the subjective expression of thermal state.
